As part of the BBC World Service, BBC Learning English has been teaching English to global audiences since 1943, offering free audio, video and text materials to learners around the world.
From our mobile English courses in Bangladesh and Latin America to our online offer for millions of English learners, BBC Learning English provides multimedia English language teaching materials to meet learners needs.
We deliver our materials as full length courses but each component of the course is standalone and can be studied on its own. This means the learner can choose the best way to study for them; by following a full course or by following the individual materials most appropriate to them.
Learning English is VOA’s multimedia source of news and information for millions of English learners worldwide. VOA programs and captioned videos are written using vocabulary at the intermediate and upper-beginner level. VOA programs are read one-third slower than normal English speed. Online texts, MP3s and podcasts let people read, listen and learn American English and much more.
Special English is a Controlled version of the English language first used on October 19, 1959, and still presented daily by the United States broadcasting service Voice of America (VOA). World news and other programs are read one-third slower than regular VOA English. Reporters avoid idioms and use a core vocabulary of about 1500 words, plus any terms needed to explain a story. The intended audience is intermediate to advanced learners of English.
